Prof. Pentti Tienari

is currently Senior Research Scientist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Neurology, University of Helsinki. He graduated from the Department of Medicine, University of Helsinki in 1989. His scientific training included an EMBO post-doctoral fellowship at University of Heidelberg, under the supervision of professor Konrad Beyreuther and training in the European Molecular Biology Laboratories, under the supervision of Dr. Carlos Dotti. His primary scientific interest is dedicated to the understanding of the genetic susceptibility background of multiple sclerosis as well as analyses of predisposing genes in Alzheimer's disease. He made numerous publications in scientific journals, including Nature Genetics, Neurology, American Journal of Human Genetics, Lancet, Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences of USA, Journal of Biological Chemistry, EMBO Journal, Annals of Neurology, Journal of Neuroimmunology. One of his major scientific contributions was a detailed description of the role of the myelin basic protein gene in the multiple sclerosis genetic susceptibility. He also took part in genome-wide scans of multiple sclerosis patients in Finland.
