Prof.
Boris Zhivotovsky
received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Radiobiology in
1975 and his Dr. Sci. in 1989 in St. Petersburg (Russia). In 1991
he joined the group of Sten Orrenius at Karolinska Institutet,
where later he was appointed Professor of Toxicology. His initial
work on mechanisms of radiation-induced lymphoid cell death led
to continued interest in understanding how radiation kills cells.
At present his general research interest is focused on cell death
mechanisms of importance for the elimination of cancer cells -
in particular, on deficiencies in the apoptotic machinery of tumor
cells resistant to treatment. His group has made notable contributions
to the characterization of caspases and their translocation during
apoptosis. Boris Zhivotovsky is an author of more than 120 publications
in a peer review journals. In 1987 he received the USSR State
Prize in Science and Technology (Gold Medal) for his research.
At present he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Moscow State University,
General Secretary of the European Cell Death Organization, Member
of the Board of Directors at the International Cell Death Society
and Swedish National Coordinator at the EC Program: Apoptosis
and programmed cell death: molecular mechanisms and applications
in biotechnology.
Boris Zhivotovsky is the organizer and leader of Annual courses
for graduate students on Apoptosis: Theory and Methods and Apoptosis
in Cancer at the Karolinska Institutet, the Organizer and a Member
of the Organizing Committee’s on many Meetings, including the
last 5 Euroconferences on Apoptosis and the Nobel Conference:
”Apoptosis: Molecular Mechanisms and Medical Implications”. He
is an Editorial Board Member of Cell Cycle, Cancer Biology and
Therapy, Radiobiology. |
